Noise Assessment in the Workplace

WHAT IS A NOISE SURVEY AND DO I NEED ONE?

The Health and Safety Executive states that Employers must conduct a noise survey if employees are likely to be exposed to more than 80dB for 6 hours or more / 85db for 2 hours or more or 90db for 45 mins or more. Some other occasions when a noise survey might be required are if you use noisy powered tools or machinery for more than half an hour a day, you work in a noisy industry such as construction, road repair, engineering, manufacturing or if your work causes impacts such as hammering, drop forging, pneumatic impact tools.

WHAT DOES A NOISE SURVEY INVOLVE?

A certified HSE Noise Survey professional would visit your site to take measurements with a handheld meter and also with small dosimeters that will clip onto individuals. This would establish where noise levels reach certain thresholds so a detailed report can then be produced about your specific high noise levels and the potential dangers.
